Corruption In Nigeria: Causes and Solution

Corruption has eaten deep into the root of our country, so much so that many people even see the country’s other name as “corruption”.It is killing our country, it has damaged our economy, our currency is devaluated and the poor are suffering, even foreign countries see us as people who are not trustworthy.

I know we understand what corruption means but that doesn’t mean I will not take my time to tell you little about it. Corruption can be seen as a dishonest or illegal behavior especially by powerful people (such as government officials) the act of corrupting someone or something that has been changed from its original form.

Corruption can be spotted in every sphere of the nation; in Family, politics, educational sector, organizations, even among friends.

It’s no news that people in power do not seek the power in the first place to help the nation rather they want to use it for their selfish interest. Imagine a politician having a huge sum of money that can feed the whole nation for three years to himself. Is that what he signed for, what kind of work is he doing rather than holding a post?Well, I reserve my comment.

Corruption has found its way into our educational institutions as well. Take a look at most of our institutions now. What I can say is that the authorities just admit student just to get their money and then expel or rusticate them for reasons that are not genuine, conducive learning environment are not even provided for them. Most projects in schools have been abandoned just because of their greediness and selfish interest. Students are now taken for granted. We also see some corrupt lecturers in institution as well those who sell irrelevant materials to student just to extort money from them and even threaten to fail them if they do not buy the materials. They will also go ahead and sell exam questions to students all in the name of getting money and buying luxuries.

I was told by someone that if twenty males with good qualification and only one female which lower qualification went on to apply for a job, the job will be given to the female candidate.Getting to hear that, I laughed until I ran out of laughter but I understand that it is the truth. Organization heads don’t employ with qualification anymore but with selfish interest. Well that one is best known to them.

Causes of Corruption
Weak/lazy Government: Weak and lazy government also contribute to corruption in our country as there are no proper checks and balances in the administrations which give individual the effrontery to do what pleases him/her and not caring about the citizen of Nigeria.

Ethnic difference: this is also one of the problem we face, people in power want to put their families, Ethnic members in their administration just because of the idea to steal money from the government pocket.

Poor pay and incentive: Some workers complains of government owing them money for months and not paying in full as well, why won’t this workers collect bribe, why won’t they go against the law when the law is riding them like horse.

Possible Solutions
Proper checks and balances: With checks and balances errors can be identified and be corrected. Agencies that are to fight corruption should also be closely monitored. Proper record of transaction and payment should be kept and check time to time.

Political Participation: People should be allowed to participate in politics, some should not be selected but people who are willing should be given the chance to prove themselves.

Good payment and incentive: Workers should be given their monthly payment on time and little incentive should be given to them to encourage them so as not to make them take bribe.

With this little piece of writing I think the present administration should find solution to corruption in Nigeria and take the country to a greater level. I am OjomuOluwadamilola and I love my country.

See Why Mercy Johnson Is Highest Paid Actress, And how Much She earns Per Movie

Mercy Johnson Okojie is the highest paid actress in Nollywood right now. Besides being one of the most sought after actresses, the dark skinned actress has placed herself on a pedestal where she now charges up to N2million fee for a movie.

In the last few years, films with Mercy Johnson’s name and face in it, have some what become an indication that the film will turn-out a best-seller. Recognising this fact, it is no wonder the actress has pushed up her fees high up for marketers and producers who request her to feature in their flicks.

A few months ago, the Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) threatened to ban the actress for allegedly becoming exorbitant with her fees, which have shot up as high up as N2m for a movie role, while the rest of her peers are paid between N700,000 and N1.2million. In her response, Johnson answered her critics to go for less payable actresses, if they are unable to pay her by saying, ‘Wats wrong when u keep quiet till u no wats up? no petition, no complain just fees those who can’t afford Heineken should stick with ‘Kai kai’.

The 28year old actress made her acting debut in the movie ‘The Maid‘ in which she played the role of a possessed house help. Her performance in the movie shot her into the limelight and has acted in other major movies ever since. With all her talents and assets, it is no wonder some media pundits have agreed that she is the most exceptional actress for the year 2013.

Afcon 2017: Nigeria Fails To Qualify After Defeat By Egypt

Nigeria has failed to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after falling to a 1-0 defeat in Egypt in their Group G match on Tuesday.

With just one game remaining and only the group winners to qualify, Nigeria cannot make up their five-point deficit to table-toppers Egypt.

Ramadan Sobhy's 65th-minute winner puts Egypt on the verge of qualification.
Egypt face Tanzania in June and will book their place in Gabon with any result better than a 3-0 defeat.
Nigeria won the Nations Cup in 2013 but have now suffered back-to-back eliminations in qualifying.

They threw everything forward to find an equaliser on Tuesday and came close when West Ham winger Victor Moses crashed a shot against the post in the 84th minute.

The match in Alexandria became a virtually all-or-nothing tie for Nigeria after Chad withdrew from the group on Sunday, citing financial difficulties, and all results from their matches were erased.

That left only three teams in Group G and in accordance with the rules of the Confederation of African Football only the winner would qualify for the finals.
Egypt have seven points with one match to play, against bottom club Tanzania, who have only one point but two games remaining.

To have any chance of qualification Tanzania would need to beat Egypt by a better scoreline than the 3-0 defeat they suffered in Egypt last June because head-to-head records would come into effect if the sides finished level on points.

Tanzania would still have to beat Nigeria in their final match in September.

President Buhari Departs Abuja For Washington DC To Attend 4th Nuclear Security Summit.

President Muhammadu Buhari just departed Abuja for Washington DC today Wednesday, March 30, 2016 to join President Barack Obama and about 60 other world leaders and heads of international organisations at the 4th Nuclear Security Summit which opens there on Thursday.

At plenary sessions of the summit which is dedicated to reinforcing international commitment to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, President Buhari will insist that while Nigeria will continue to sustain that commitment, world powers must respect the right of other countries to the peaceful use of nuclear energy for development purposes.

The President will reaffirm Nigeria's stance that international efforts to ensure greater security of nuclear materials should maintain a balance between nuclear non-proliferation obligations and the indisputable right of Nigeria and other countries to harness nuclear energy and technology for socio-economic development.

It will be recalled that at a meeting with him in Abuja earlier this month, President Buhari told the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mr. Yukiya Amano that the Federal Government will welcome greater support from the agency for Nigeria's aspiration to begin the generation of electricity with nuclear energy.

While in Washington DC for the Nuclear Security Summit, the President and his delegation which includes Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd.) and the Director-General of Nigeria's Nuclear Regulatory Agency, Prof Lawrence Anikwe Dim, will also hold bilateral meetings with other participating Heads of Government and high-ranking United States Government officials.

President Buhari will depart Washington DC for Abuja on Sunday.
